How  to turn off Junk E-mail - help!!!
Environment: Exchange 2003 and Outlook 2007 Problem: Cant turn off Junk E-mail - I thought it was turned off in all the necessary areas, but it keeps moving message to this folder. Things tried: Turned Junk filter off in Outlook and Outlook Web Access, and made sure Inteligent message filtering is shutoff in Exchange. Can anyone point me in the correct direction? Thanks in advance! Mikemike Hartman

Check the properties of the SMTP virtual server through which you receive external mail. Make sure that the IMF is turned off there, too. That might be the place that is still processing spam.I got a good chuckle out of your postsince most people are trying to get rid of more spam. :-) Jim McBee - Blog - http://mostlyexchange.blogspot.com

Jim, We have a external spam product that scans the email before it gets to the SMTP server and we are getting a lot of false positives, including employees emails sent to each other internally. The IMF is turned off, but we are still getting email sent to the Junk E-mail folder. Any help would be appreciated! Mikemike Hartman

Sounds like you need to look at another Antispam service/device if you are getting thatmany false positives. Have you confirmed your third party product is not sending the spam mail to the Junk Mail folder?MVP Exchange Server

That is VERY weird that you are getting false positives on internal e-mail. Is this e-mail from one Outlook user to another? The IMF categorizes all internal e-mail (e-mail that is sent via an authenticated connection) as an SCL value of 0. Did you configure the IMF originally? I used to recommend to some of my customers that they customize this file:MSExchange.UceContentFilter.xml This could allow you to create your own custom weightings for certain words or phrases. I would frequently use this in conjunction with a 3rd party tool to mark anything they considered possibly spam and move it to the user's Junk E-mail folder. Take a look at this article to see if maybe someone configured this on your Exchange server:http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Intelligent-Message-Filter-version-2-IMF-v2.htmlJim McBee - Blog - http://mostlyexchange.blogspot.com

Hi Mike, 1. Would you please let me know whether the issue can be reproduced? For example, an internal email is moved to junk email folder incorrectly. Whether you can have the sender to resend the same message to check whether the issue persists? 2. If the issue can be reproduced, would you please have the recipient close Outlook and use OWA to receive the same message again? Whether the message still goes into the Junk Email folder? 3. If you create a new mailbox and logon OWA, whether the issue can be reproduced when the sender sends same message to the new user? 4. I suggest you refer to following article to check whether the problem message has SCL set: Exposing SCL (Spam Confidence Level) in Outlook http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2004/05/26/142607.aspx Mike Shen TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com

Mike, Thanks for the reply! We had a couple of emails internally go into the Junk Email folder, but unfortunately we just moved the emails. I havent been able to locate the emails. We are waiting for it to happen again so we can try to duplicate. I enabled the SCL form on one of the workstations, but there is no data. Did I do something wrong? Thanks! Mikemike Hartman

Hi Mike, If you do not have IMF enabled on the Exchange Server, I believe it is normal that you are not able to get SCL value by referring to the article. Based on current situation, I suggest you monitor the issue currently. If the issue occurs again, please perform the steps in my previous post. I would like to explain that the message can be moved to Junk Email folder due to several reasons: 1. Once IMF scans the message, it will set a SCL value for the message. When store receives the message, it will check the SCL setting and move the message to Junk Email folder if the SCL value of the message exceeds SCL threshold. 2. Outlook doesnt use the IMF provided SCL values for its client-side (cached-mode only) anti-spam determination. Instead, it does its own Junk E-mail evaluation and determines whether or not to move the mail to the Junk E-mail folder based on the settings within the Tools->Options Junk E-mail settings. 3. Corrupt rule in the mailbox may also move the message to Junk E-mail folder. I suggest you read following article regarding the IMF and the Junk E-mail folder in Outlook: http://blogs.technet.com/evand/archive/2005/01/31/363935.aspx Therefore, in my previous post, I suggest you receive the message by using OWA to check whether it is a client side issue. You can also create a new mailbox to test whether it is a specific mailbox issue. Thanks,Mike
